Wildflowers!
We know them as wildflowers. Growing along the roadside or in an uncultivated field are the flowers recognized by some as the most wonderful and beautiful in the world. Sprouting up on their own without human intervention defines the term but scientists discourage us from using it. Native species is probably a more accurate description. One thing agreed upon is the surprising beauty that is experienced when encountering these native gems in the wild.

Native species may be annual, biennial or perennial flowers. This plus the issues of different topography, soil types, rainfall and temperature and how they affect them, make for extraordinary diversity in this group. North America is divided into six different regions because of these factors. Some of the flowers may be found in several regions while others are native to only one. Identification can be difficult because of this.

Many of the cultivated flowers we know also populate this group, such as petunias, morning glory and coreopsis. Through the purchase of seed packs you can enjoy many of the species in your own yard. Mixtures are available that target attracting humming birds and butterflies. For the photography enthusiast, the variety in these mixtures offer many flower photo opportunities. Please savor the beauty of the example pictures on this page and those you will find in the gallery.
